Ideas manufacturing.

These days start ups, venture capitalists, angels are generally associated with the internet, software, or IT start ups in general. They have to not necessarily be related to IT alone, it might relate to any body and everybody who wants to start an enterprise of their own. I would like to share my experiences about starting my firm. There are as many opportunities in manufacturing as there are in services sector. And also would like to share my views on the general trends that we might see in the Indian manufacturing sector in the coming 2-4 decades.

I am a Mechanical Engineer planning to start a foundry tentatively pegged at 3 Cr INR.By all probability it should up an running in 8-9 months from now. Before starting   we made an extensive research on Indian Manufacturing that would have high growth prospects.  And I would like to share my research and probably few ideas to work on.

All startups : IT, Manufacturing or otherwise many things are common but again have their own traits. Knowing of which can make life easy for many who dream of starting their own enterprise.

The general economic activity of a country is summarised as the GDP of that country. Its subdivided into Agriculture, Services and Manufacturing sectors. Each is measured individually and its percentage to the total is calculated. Looking at the general economic history of the world, every economy goes through a phases of  agriculture, manufacturing and services (in that order) as the maximum contributor.  Its been a tendency for all the "advanced/ mature economies" to have a large share from the services sector and very minuscule contribution from the Agriculture sector. Typically UK has 2% from Agriculture, 65% Services and rest from manufacturing. India is perhaps the only country which is still developing but has a very high contribution from the services sector. About 60% of the population is in agriculture and allied activities but only contributes about 17 % to the GDP. For the first time in the history of Independent India, Manufacturing has contributed more than agriculture in the fiscal year 2010.

The mature economies more so the G20 saw a phase of rapid industrialisation before they have settled into services. No wonder they are called "Industrialised nations". Going by the collective economic history of the world it seems probable that the Indian Manufacturing is at the verge of rapid explosion in the manufacturing sector. With about 4 lakh Engineers graduating every year, with a liberal and English speaking population, with a vibrant economy, demographics on its side.  India has made a mark as a Services Giant. No wonder its been called as the Call canter of the world. The word Bangalored has been inducted to the new Oxford dictionary meaning outsourced!

The same set of factors which have seen India as a Services giant will perhaps make even us a Manufacturing giant. India can leverage from the achievements from its IT/ITES too. And India appeals to the world not just as a low cost manufacturer but to its brains and large educated, English speaking population. The stage seems to be set for this.

The worlds single largest  integrated facility for auto component manufacturing and assembly does not lie in Stuttgart, Germany  nor in shanghai, China nor in detroit , USA but it lies in the sleepy industrial Indian city of Pune: thats Bharat forge.

Consider this: The Macro Economics.

1. India is the fourth largest economy according to PPP: purchasing power parity terms.

2. It has one of the most youthful population with 50% people less than 30 years.

3. It has averaged over 7%  growth  rate since 1997.

4. India has been the second fastest growing economy in the world, only after china; with 7.2% growth rate in the Financial year 2009-10 even during the times of recession..

5. Recession effect: There has been a tectonic shift in the new world economic order where in the focus is moving away from Euro zone and US dollar to Asia: China and India. The large Foreign Direct Investments: started as a trickle is now a full fledged flood!

6. Emerging economies: The emerging economies is where the real action is. The famous (or infamous) BRIC countries might lead the charge, including Indonesia, Turkey, Poland etc.

7. The mature economies have really "matured" as markets and hardly have  seen any growth prospects. For example: The "TRIAD" of Europe, North America, Japan saw almost 2-5% growth in auto. Where as the same figures in India and China for the year 2008 are about 14% and 24% respectively. And that was when recession hit.
8. India will play an increasing role in the global economy as demand from a growing working-age population will continue to drive consumption demand. We estimate that over the next decade as this population earns, consumes and saves more, these factors could contribute about 4% annually to India's GDP. The country's demographic dividend will be substantial over the next couple of decades. India will add about 110 million workers to its labor force over that time, which is more than the U.S., China, Russia and Japan will add combined.

What does this mean to any Investing company or any budding entrepreneur?

The made in India brand could well become the next big manufacturing export story.Sectors in which India can be a world beater: Metal fabrication, Specialty chemicals, Auto components manufacturing, defence, aerospace, power equipment manufacturing, Engineering services outsourcing, skill intensive-manufacturing sectors, clean technologies, R&D and design hub of global manufacturing.

If you are the sort of person who would like to solve the money problem once for all instead of working for a salary for 40 years, then a start up makes sense!

The Down Side:
Second generation reforms: The reforms of 1991 : Till 1991 India was largely "Autarkic".And after the reforms  economy shifted to a new gear from The Hindu Growth rate of about 3-5%. But a second generation reforms are badly needed.

Bureaucracy and redtape: India's rise as an IT giant is a classic case of less bureaucracy and no redtape. The IT growth was largely private sector led. Unlike the earlier scenario of license/permit raj there was no growth clampers as such.

High interest rates, High inflation, and bad fiscal position.

The way out.

1.Infrastructure: seaports, airports, power, roads, restrictive labour laws, bureaucratic red tape, high and complex taxation system,

2. Governance is going to be a critical challenge and has been over the past few years, and the way India resos it would also affect its potential growth rates. A lot is being done, but it remains to be seen whether these changes will have a material impact on the economy's growth over time.

3. control inflation, introduce credible fiscal policy, liberalize financial markets and increase trade with its neighbors
.
4. „ It also needs both to significantly raise its basic educational standards,
and increase the quality and quantity of its universities.

5. „ India needs to boost agricultural productivity, improve its infrastructure
and environmental quality.

Delivery of all these would ensure strong, persistent, medium to longterm growth, allowing India to reach its amazing potential.

Every body thinks that they have a mind blowing idea and want to start up an enterprise:
But here are few suggestions:

1. Pick good co-founders: What matters is not ideas, but the people who have them, Good people can fix bad ideas but good ideas cannot save bad people.
At the end of the day its a team work but just one or two people end up as the war horses! And in a start up its the co-founders who are the employees too and they cannot be replaced.

Pick up someone who do their work too seriously and not the people who work just for remuneration. Pick up people who border on professionalism, obsession.

The founders should include technical people.

2. launch fast.

3. Let your idea evolve:

4. understand your market.

5. Business Plan: Take your Business Plan seriously. Its again is not a complicated document. Initially I was terrified at the prospect because it had the word Business and it was asking the plan. But just put all your thoughts on paper and thats about it. And inlcude all aspects of the enterprise: who will take care of what? what do we need to get there? marketing channels?

6. Engineers syndrome: People generally tend to have this weird habit of looking at the market from an engineers point of view. If you know how to make jet engines then an enterprise does not stop at that :  you  should think  as to how do you plan to market it?  What are your channels of marketing? How will you make know the people who might be your potential clients and the services/products you offer? Break even analysis , financials, returns on investments are equally important to ponder.

7. Better to make your a few clients love you more than lot ambivalent.

8. Offer surprisingly good customer service.

9. You make what you measure.

10. spend judiciously.

11. get ramen profitable.

12. avoid distractions.

13. dont get demoralised.

14. dont give up.

15. deals fall through.

16. Friends and P.R: I was surprised the way people went out of their way to help me up in the pursuit. People we met just couple of days introduced to really influential people. Some gave us amazingly practical solutions. Just pitch up your you will see the kind of twists and turns some unkown people can influnce on it.

17. Obsessive compulsive watch on the market: What does the market want? To keep it simple just observe what the market problem is and what solution you are offering?  This gives you the focus market, marketing, business model, revenue model too.

You dont need a "brillaint idea" to start a start up around. The way to make start ups work is to offer people better solutions than they have now. But what people offer now is often so bad that it doesnt take brillaince to do better.

Its hard to repeat a brilliant performance but very easy to avoid errors!

18. We Vs I: Pick up people who use the word us and we more than I. It really works and means so much of their intentions.

19. finance: Not all companies are self financed seed capital: investment.

20. Negative lessons in life more important than the positive lessons. Dont hesitate

21. Plan operations and quality assurance: Organizations. immaterial of their size put most of their efforts in fire fighting or fixing. This could be avoided by proper planning of operations.

I dont think  the amount of bull shit that you have to deal within a start up is more than you can endure in your entire life. Its probably less, infact mainly what a start up buys you is time .

Many of todays companies achieved their greatest growth and success after recognising and pursuing business opportunities far beyond their original offerings.

Before all that one of the most important questions that you have answer for yourself is to Why do you want to become an entrepreneur or why do you want to start that enterprise?  This needs some serious soul searching. And a question really worth pondering. Its about money? Is it about ego: owning an own enterprise? or is it achievement motivation? or is it self actualisation: trying to realise your true potential?

Love story in a temple.

Neeti was simply surprised that I finally liked someone. She almost fell on the ground hearing the news. I asked  her to come over to my place ASAP. I insisted that we meet in the temple and advised her to wear anything ethnic. I reached the temple in a chudidar, which is not my real attire and just kept waited for her. She was so taken by the news and that she arrived in auto: not watsing time. She just couldnt wait to see the guy. She paid the auto and then was literally running towards me. I was waiting for her at the temple entrance. You?!! You like a guy? and you want me to see him? This would be the 8th wonder and im just wondering who that is.

The srinagar colony temple is quite huge. It has 4/5 temples of different Indian gods. That day the temple sported a deserted look, rather unusual  on a saturday. Neeti just finished her engineering exams and was  awaiting her i-20 and US visa. My school freind and best buddy. So she prayed, irritated and vexed the gods that she be granted visa. It took us almost an hour by the time we came sat out side the shiva temple. and then happily dug ourselves into the prasadam that was given and the laddoos that we bought at the counter.Making up for the breakfast that we skipped. Then she realised the purpose that we came. So she asked in a rather curious tone: where is your guy? Is he coming or do we wait?

We made a special delicacy today. you can have the prasadam said a rather strong voice. Neeti was rather happy to have more. The priest who was about 28 years  inquired about my studies and the permissions to do my housie in Hyderabad.

Why is he bothered about your housie? Being a priest why and how is he flirting with you? she asked in a rather irritated tone. and then we settled down at one corner of the temple to dig into our breakfast again. He is a Cardiologist from AIIMS. Neeti was rather surprised to hear that a temple priest is a Cardiologist from a very reputed institute. I was pursuing UG at Christian Medical college Vellore and wanted to do my housie in Hyderabad. But there were some permissions  to be taken and he was ready to help.

Why is he working as a priest if he is a doctor? Neeti said. Well, his uncle is the chief priest here and he helps him out when ever he in Hyderabad. What about his parents? she asked. and with every question; her curiosity , suspicion and voice ever increasing.

His dad is the famous Neurologist Narasimha deekshitulu and mom HoD Gynecology at Gandhi Medical college. Neeti gave a surprised look and said "parents, both doctors?". Even his sister is pursuing medicine in OMC.

Well if you remember his uncle performed my sisters marriage. Even before that when my parents were thinking about marriage he  famously predicted when and to whom my sister would be married. A good astrologer.

REALLY?! Can he tell me about my US visa? when will I go? I said : I think so. She requested ian a very pleasing tone that we comeback and ask the guy about her visa/

And then Neeti asked again where is your guy?
I said you still dont get it ? do you?
Neeti gave a very awkward look which resembled anything that was a shock, happiness and disbelief .
So whats the catch? you are a doctor. everybody in their family is a doctor. whats the problem.
Even our horoscopes match!! I said a a mischievous tone.

So whats the catch? Subcaste! I declared.

In this age of internet and android who really cares for caste and religion. But how come subcaste is an issue. I said thats not a problem with you and the world but for it is.

Neeti told her parents and they plunged into Mission Marriage immediately. Neither my parents, nor the guys parents. not even the boy know about the entire thing.

Her parents also checked the boys and family  background and everything seemed to be perfect. Then they referred the guys name to my parents and they seemed happy about the proposition. The guys side seemed excited too as prospective bride was also a doctor.

And alls well that ends well.

Naughty, beauty, cutie.

I think Women fall into three categories: the naughty, beauty, and sweety types. Im not an authority on the subject matter of women nor a male chauvinist but presently I have to make a  choice from these three.
Im just like your average joe that you might find anywhere. A  well paying job, average looks, 3 years after college, lil financially independent and the next important question of relationships, girl friends, marriage, settling down in life.

The Naughty: For her  life is a big party. Pubs, disco's, late night outs are a must. Booze alcohol,  "a joint" perhaps?, They like to live on the edge. The wild, adventurous, easy going and take light types with so much rebellious nature against the society and norms.

I have not seen a women who abuses, uses or over uses the F-word so much like her. Being a man I feel lil awkward to discuss few things especially to the other gender but in her presence there are no "bars"  to  subjects like lesbians, orgasms, and all the stuff that a girl should be talking to another girl.

Whats more disgusting is the guys attitude towards her: "De degi" types. Some call her sl*t, lil wh*re. I never bothered to understand if she was right or neither did I try to correct her. Its her life so she will live with it and its consequences.

But when it comes to me it definitely is not matching my frequency so  :REJECTED!

Beauty:  She is the very epitome of beauty and looks. The princess who would get burnt when she tries to walk the distance between the restaurant and the parking place in  day time. She is  so soft and tender that they have to be handled with care as they are gentle and fragile souls. The greatest of their achievements is that they are born beautiful. And every girl seems to be fascinated with this word and call them that and  you have won their attention. Some lesser mortals just try to get into that bracket by all possible means.

For them they are always chased by men. Its very hard for any man perhaps not to fall for such a girl . and in the corporate world it seems that they have to have such a girl as show pieces, face and looks of the company. Marketing and presales manager is the job description. I wonder if being beautiful is the only qualification that this girl has got. Leaving apart the communication skills.

They are an expensive assets to maintain but keeping them happy is one of the most difficult jobs in the word. They are fussy and they are messy!

"He looks very very handsome. 6 feet tall and well built body". That was the first description of her ex-boyfriend. She sounded like it was the only thing that mattered. She sounded like she has some 100 men proposing each day but she is looking for her soulmate and she found. that in this 6 feet tall, well built, handsome man. As I expected this guy had  deep pockets and with some good business and political connections. He was a passionate "speedster";loved cars and bikes NOT as much as the girl. Then came the twist that the guy had to go to Nigera to handle the family oil drilling business. Her sources said that he met a french women in Nigera and he perhaps was going after her as there was no one to check on him.

She loved going to good restaurants and try new food. And over dinner, or lunch many times with wine she used to tell me about the surprises that the guy gave and the wonderful 2 years they nurtured the relationship.

I just imagined my life with her : very demanding: the soft way, high on maintenance and very fragile soul. I wondered if i could be ever happy keeping up with her expectations.

She actually was expecting somebody who was very intelligent, witty, caring, sensitive and who made her laugh. But her boy friend of hers never really seemed to come anywhere close to that. All I could think was that the guy had to work really hard "to keep up with her expectations:surprises, gifts, dates, roses and diamond ring. That guy drives an Audi  and I have a swift and a maruthi 800 back home.

The cutie: Her  traits include: patience, adaptability and is a good listener, no non sense and sensible. But they are so rigid and dumb folks  that what they care is about their feelings. They live a double life as in the limited

Every girl wants to date a hunk. The tall, dark and handsome types. The most popular guy. Even its the same with guys. The "hottest chick" in the college/work place/ friends group. They perhaps want to show it up as a trophy that was won in an competition. And may be thats an identity crisis that that being in a relationship is a must else you are a loser. I wonder how many of these translate into successful marriages. Before this the relationships pass through number of things that these guys understand each other perfectly. Each perhaps are of the same frequency but again complementary in many aspects. One should complete the other.  I envisaged three scenarios:
1. I would be having a joint on my first night. REJECT.
2. I would be appeasing the princess because she is to be treated like her and will not adjust to the situations.
3. A sensible girl who would strive to be a good wife, daughter in law. and perhaps a good mother especially to a girl.

My dad is a bad son, an average husband but the best  dad in the whole wide world. He has his own flaws but he made it! From the impoverished, unstable, emotionally charged streets of Oldcity to a better looking "decent" colony we came a long way. He always put his children first and.

I really wonder ho many of the couples think or the many who claim to be in relationship have a successful marriage. Whjt really irritates me or pisses me off is the word break up or moved over. Nothing of that was ever heard in my family. My granny even at this age cries and serves my grand dad when he is hurt or falls sick.

In this age of i-pods, i-pads and i-pills there is a faint hope  of meeting ones soul mate. In the age of fast foods and fast relationships there is faint hope for a successful relations.

Back home : I come for a "orthodox-caste-Hindu"  family. A very simple family. The ladies dont talk much. The men  take all things as their responsibility and are successful in their own way. The ladies dont talk much doesnt mean that they are not allowed to open their mouths but they are never given a chance to complain.

paa movie review.

Amol Atre (Abhishek Bachchan) and Vidya (Vidya Balan) fall in love when ic college. Vidya becomes pregnant and Amol is not ready for the marriage yet. he is an ambitious politician, who wants to get into his fathers role.He suggests her to abort the child. They separate ways and Amol gets busy in politics and becomes an MP. Vidya becomes a gynaecologist. Vidya gives birth to a boy called Auro (Amitab Bachchan). He suffers from a rare disease of Progeria. Though he is a 13 year old boy, he looks like 60 year old man. Amol lost track of Vidya and is under impression that she aborted the kid. The rest of the story is all about what happens when Auro comes to know that Amol is his father.

Actors:
Amitab Bachchan: This film belongs to Amitab Bachchan. He is absolutely wonderful as Auro. He did it so well (thanks to amazing prosthetic make-up by
christian tinsley: Passion Of The Christ, Catwoman and other films) and Dominie Till (The Lord Of The Rings trilogy).) that you wouldn’t notice AB at at all on the screen. You would only watch the character Auro. Only in a few instances (eyes during close-ups and postures in long shots) you would notice mannerisms of Big B. Altered voiced of Amitabh suited Auro character very well. Amitabh proves to be the PAA of all actors with this movie.

Others: Vidya Balan is magnificent as a single mother and it is one of her finest performances till date. The grittiness of a single mother and caring devotion towards her special child is projected well through her character. Abhishek Bachchan is alright as a father of special child and as a noble parliamentarian. Arundhati Naag (wife of Kannada actor Shankar Nag) is compassionate as the ‘bum’. The child actress from Cheeni Kum is cute. Paresh Rawal dons the role of Abhishek’s father and it’s a different character for him. Jaya Bachchan looks little out of place in the title cards of the movie.

Technical departments:

Story - screenplay – direction: The get-up of Auro has some resemblance to the hero character in ‘The Benjamin Button’ movie. The is born with a rare disease where in he grows back ward.Director Balki’s approach reminds me of Mani Ratnam’s style in his pre-Amruta years. He used a typical Mani ratnams team: p.c sreeram; ilayaraja. Mani Ratnam’s Anjali and Geetanjali movies talk about death. But they show the lighter side of it than the morbid part of death. Likewise, Balki also took the brighter side of death and made the movie in light-hearted fashion. At the same time, he didn’t miss out on the feel. One would have moisture in eyes towards the climax of the movie. However, the entire movie runs on predictable screenplay. The thread of slum deviates from the main plot of the movie. Balki is the man from advertising field and he possess enormous amount of creativity which is evident from scenes like

1. White globe explanation
2. Bum-blast description
3. Poor people storming into the homes of media men
4. The one liners written for Auro character

Other technical departments: Background by Ilayaraja is haunting and adds lot of emotion to the scenes. The songs which are mostly remixed versions of his south Indian songs are very good. Cinematography by PC Sreeram is excellent. Dialogues are witty and nicely written. Editing is little confusing towards the beginning of the movie. Make-up department deserves special appreciation.

Analysis: Paa movie has a simple story with an interesting premise. Paa title becomes relevant because the real-life father-son duo of Bachchans is doing role reversal in the movie. But the title of MAA would have been more apt as per the script. This movie has fair amount of flaws. But what matters in this movie are the performances Amitab Bachchan/Vidya Balan and the emotional quotient towards climax. For me, Balki appears more like wearing the shoes of vintage Mani Ratnam and making his kind of movies. You may watch Paa for Auro character.

watch it for AURO.

munich: movie review.

This movie is attempts to understand what drives people to kill other people for any reason is, in the pit of the hole.Whether that 'reason' is war between countries at odds, protecting one's self when endangered, revenge or vengeance for deeds perpetrated by 'the other', for panic in the moment of survival - each of these feels wrong despite the fundamental belief to the contrary at the moment of killing. MUNICH is about killing, about vengeance, about protection of 'home', about existence in a world so bifurcated by age-old schisms, and about us.One mans Freedom Fighter is another mans Terrorist. And while absorbing all of the 2 1/2 hour plus visual and philosophical information put forth in this epic film, the viewer is so paralyzed by the story that blinking for a second seems irreverent.

In 1972 Olympic games Israeli atheletes are killed by masked Arab/Palestinian marauders. This came to be known as "The Black September" .The Israeli govt appoints a secret mission to kill the Arab members responsible for the black september. and brought to life by a cast that simply could not be finer. From the opening of the movie without credits, spielberg portrays the dark side of the human emotions and the proxy war going on for centuries. This is all under the instruction and guidance of Golda Meir (brilliantly played by Lynn Cohen) and her advisors. This is not for the average mind. You need to be informed about the Arab-Israeli conflict, Mossad, CIA, MI6,KGB, and how the secret Intelligence agencies work. This according to me is the second best movie after Schindlers List.

The film is based on the book Vengeance: the true story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist team by canadian journlist Geroge Joans.

The film shows how a squad of assassins, led by former Mossad agent Avner Eric; Bana, track down and murder a list of Black September members thought to be responsible for the eleven Israeli athletes' murders. The film was nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture.

One of my favourite dialogues in the movie is by a mother to her son:" Home is everything. We finally have a land on the face of this planet that we can call our home."

The Camera Work , Music, Editing, Screen Play by Eric Roth is really amazing.

The Movie was nominated for Academy Awards in 5 sections including Best picture.

Final Words: Highly recommended.Epic. Very Moving.
